Admission Process

We look forward to working with you and your family through the admission process. Here you will find a checklist and guidelines for completing your application to Cambridge Friends School.

List of 4 items.

  • 1. Parent Visit

The parent visit, which includes a tour of the school, is an opportunity for prospective parents or guardians to talk with the admission staff about CFS and its curriculum, philosophy, and policies. The interview following the tour is an opportunity to ask specific questions and convey your goals for your child's education. Please fill out our inquiry form to start the application process. Tours and Visits for the 2019-2020 admission cycle will begin on October 1, 2018

  • 2. Application and Recommendations

A complete application for admission to Cambridge Friends School includes the following required elements:
    • Application form
    • School records from the two most recent years (if applicable)
    • Recommendation letters based on grade level (see links to the right)
    • Student Questionnaire (Middle School applicants only)
A nonrefundable $50 application fee should be submitted with the application. Fee waivers are available for eligible families.

Cambridge Friends School supplies families with the necessary forms for requesting copies of transcripts and for teacher recommendations. We request that parents or guardians manage this step so that they may retain complete control as to when a child's current school and teacher(s) are made aware that they may be changing schools.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Recommendation and transcript release forms are forwarded by you to your child's current school and then returned directly to CFS by each child's school and teachers.
  • 3. Student Visit Days

The student visit is a required step in the admission process and students may be asked to participate in age-appropriate activities.

Applicants to Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 should attend our Student Visit Day in mid-January. Families applying for the second round of admission should reach out to the Admission Office to arrange a visit during the school day.

Applicants to grades 2-8 have the opportunity to visit CFS for a half-day of classes with their peers. These half-day visits are by appointment and should be completed by the January application deadline in order to be considered in our first round of admission.

Contact the admission office at to arrange your child's visit day.
  • 4. Standardized Testing

Students applying to Middle School (grades 6-8) are asked to take the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). Our SSAT Code is 2015. Testing should be complete by our application deadline. If an applicant is unable to complete testing, a student visit and assessment can be scheduled in place of testing.

If you are applying late or cannot find a test date before our deadline, please contact our office for more information and guidance. We require no formal testing for admission to the Lower School; however, if they are available, we do accept standardized test results.

Admission Policies

  • An admission committee determines qualification for entry into each grade. Admission decisions are based on composing a well-balanced, diverse group of children who, in the view of the school, will learn well with and from one another.
  • Children must be four years-old by September 1 of the entering fall to be considered for our Pre-K and five years-old by September 1 of the entering fall to be considered for K. Children entering the school must also be toilet-trained.
  • Qualified siblings of enrolled students are given priority consideration in the admission process. Siblings who complete the application by the January 15 deadline will be notified of their admission decision in mid-February, the same day that re-enrollment contracts are released. This allows current CFS families to make all of their enrollment decisions at once.
  • Admission decisions are need-aware. Please contact our office for more information about our admission and financial aid policies.
  • Admission decisions are sent on March 10. Parents and guardians must respond to the school no later than April 10. Families who are notified of a space for their child after April 10 will have one to two weeks to make their decision regarding enrollment.
  • Cambridge Friends School has a robust second round of admission in the spring and summer. Please reach out to the Admission Office to arrange a personal tour, student visit, or attend one of our spring recruitment events!
  • A wait list of candidates is established for all grades each year. Unless the candidate's parents or guardians inform the school to the contrary, a candidate's name will remain on the wait list through the summer and until the start of the school year. At the start of the school year, the wait list is eliminated and the admission process starts again.
  • Cambridge Friends School does not discriminate on the basis of sex, religion, race, color, national and ethnic origin, or sexual orientation in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, financial aid, and other school-administered programs.
  • Cambridge Friends adheres to the Principles of Good Practice set forth by the National Association of Independent Schools.
