Lower & Middle School Visual Arts Cambridge Friends School is known for its dynamic and exciting visual arts program. In the art studio, students explore a wide variety of materials and processes. They discover a world of visual expression and learn such concepts as color, shape, line, texture, contrast, form, and pattern. Students have an inherent impulse to create, and this creative expression follows certain directions of natural growth. Therefore, students' art activities are based on their life experiences and encourage individual artistic expression. Their art experiences include developing the techniques and processes of productive thinking as well as manipulative skills. As students recognize possibilities, they explore new media and techniques, and develop visual perception and sensory awareness. The art curriculum offers students opportunities and freedom to experiment in the context of clearly defined requirements and guidelines. For all levels, learning in art proceeds from the general to the specific. The overall goal is to educate the whole child in various artistic disciplines and to promote life-long appreciation for and involvement in the arts. |
