Letter to Mary Newmann
from a First-Time Visitor

Stopped in this morning at CFS to drop off a paper to one of my tutees, a new sixth-grader as of last September. After all my 40 years of teaching, and most of them right here in Cambridge, I have to say I have never visited Cambridge Friends School.

In my meanderings, I took in the sights and sounds of the school. As I peeked into classrooms along my route I could see children working together, working alone, carrying on discussions, all very busy and productive. When I reached my tutee's classroom, the children were so busy with their individual research they didn't even notice me come into the room. His teacher greeted me and encouraged me to go right over to my student to give him his paper. The children's papers and projects tacked up on the walls revealed a sturdy level of academic work going on in there. Just terrific! What a place, what a productive and happy environment for learning. Bravo!

The level of work going on at CFS matches the work in many of the other private schools. This has become evident to me as I see the work your CFS student is doing. Quite a school you have. I should have visited years ago!
