Fifth-Grade Bookbinding

Grade 5 learned to bind a book using an open-joint format. This means that both the space between the covers and the pages are open, as well as the spaces between the page groups, or "signatures.” The pages are held together because they are sewn onto ribbons. The covers are held to the pages with these ribbons as well. Students produced marbled papers, paste papers, and sprayed-paint papers to decorate their covers. These books will be used as sketchbooks for fifth-grade artists to use throughout the year.
